about

On 19th April 2013 I was invited to play a set at Greenwich Chapel as part of a celebration of the life of Sam Hiller. It was a true honour to be invited and indeed quite a challenge to sum up all of Sam's electronic musical influences in two 10 minute sets, bookending choral performances from Trinity Laban Chamber Choir, Old Royal Naval College Chapel Choir and members of the Trinity Laban Voice students.

Sam and I became close friends at Sheffield University where we both managed to successfully fail our courses together, drop out together, get jobs together then set up Tinnitus together.

Sam bought me my first ever Breakcore 12" - The Full English Breakfast on Planet Mu. He also took me to a number of Squat parties in London and introduced me to live electronic music events such as Bangface and Glade. All of which were great music influences for me, and inspiration for Tinnitus.

"Tinnitus is a not-for-profit promotions collective based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, putting on small to medium scale events playing a wide variety of modern, cutting edge electronic music at the more abrasive end of the ‘Dance’ spectrum.  Emerging in early 2006 through the founders’ massive frustration with a local lack of events promoting the music they loved, and, rooted firmly in the principle of ‘if you want something doing properly, do it yourself’, Tinnitus has built up an ever-increasing local and regional following, thanks to the quality and unique nature of the events.  Some, but not all, of the genres played at Tinnitus include Breakcore, Hardcore Techno, Schranz, Hardcore, Jungle, Dubstep, Electronica and Choppage/Hard DnB." (Sam, 2008)

In 2008, thanks to an application created by Sam, Tinnitus was awarded a grant by the PRSF to promote new UK Live music over a series of 8 monthly events. The funding went on to secure Tinnitus as a breakthrough night booking artists including; Broken Note, The DJ Producer, DJ Hidden, SPL, Matt Green, Ebola, Murderbot, Dolphin and Headcleaner.

"The PRSF grant awarded for 2008/09 will enable a broader diversity of British live acts to appear at the night, in addition to improvements to the already high production values, with a particular emphasis on the original and striking promotional materials created by a highly talented local artist.  Events will be running on a monthly basis from October at The Red House on Solly Street, Sheffield S1." (Sam, 2008)

The first set attempts to sum up Sam's lower tempo musical influences in the form of London centric bass music spanning Garage, Breaks and Drum and Bass. Separating the two sets is a beautiful interpretation of Psalm 150 created and performed by Stuart Mitchell at Sam's memorial ceremony.

The second set sees the tempo increase through Drum and Bass and Hardcore. Notably missing from the second performance is Sam's favourite Speedcore artist P.O.S. I'll blame the time constraints but, in reality, the extremity of the music may well have surpassed the tolerance level of non Speedcore lovers in attendance on the day.

Sam always was and still is an incredible individual with an unprecedented, eclectic appreciation of music (sometimes with questionable taste). Sam will remain forever immortalised by the music he loved and the influence he had on all of his friends spanning the length and breadth of the country and all walks of life. Never forgotten.

Thanks to Simon Hiller, Frances Hiller and family, Stuart Mitchell, Jeremy Frost ,Gordon Waterson, Matt Jones and everyone else who helped and attend on the day. The ceremony was a truly beautiful occasion and I know that it fulfilled one of Sam's ultimate aspirations, a "Church Rave".

All tracks are 16 bit wav recording mastered for digital release, re-edited and recorded in Ableton by myself, Rich Dalton. Artwork by Matt Jones.

The Samuel Hiller Memorial Fund is a charitable trust which has been established in Sam's memory at the request of his family. The fund works to promote education in church choral music, which Sam loved so much. Donations for this mix via Bandcamp and are gratefully received and will all go to SHMF.
